Fiji
The Crossroads of the South Pacific
Fiji is a tropical heaven in the South Pacific, where the sun shines every day. The archipelago consists of 322 volcanic and coral islands, lapped by warm azure waters. Once feared by sailors as the haunt of cannibals and fierce warrior tribes, the Fiji of today is home to a friendly and hospitable people, who are non-judgmental, rarely express a negative opinion, and consider it rude to rush. In fact, Fiji’s true magic lies in its people and the fascinating blend of diverse cultures.
Known as ‘The Crossroads of the Pacific’ because the 180° Meridian passes through the islands, Fiji is blessed with a mild tropical climate, which means that the islands can be enjoyed all year round and are a popular escape from the winters in both the northern and southern hemispheres.
In Fiji, you can hike mountains and trek rainforest trails, raft white waters, swim with manta rays, snorkel over colourful soft coral gardens, scuba dive on the famous Astrolabe Reef, or ride the incredible six-metre waves known as the ‘Cloud Breakers’ off Tavarua. More sedate activities include visits to an old colonial capital city or motor tours through the highlands, where you can explore the serenity of Fiji’s wilderness. The main island of Viti Levu has several large towns and the bustling capital of Suva, which is a shopper’s paradise and offers an upbeat nightlife.
Fiji is a land of ancient rituals, and visitors are welcomed as honoured guests at ceremonies such as the Yaqona, which is still enacted as it has been for centuries. Flowers bloom in abundance on these palm-fringed islands, and orchids overhang waterfalls that plunge into cool jungle pools.
In Fiji you will be wearing flowers in your hair. Look forward to a zesty blend of cultures in a truly heavenly setting.
